Daniel Wasson’s professional experience, versatility and possession-oriented play impressed Stars head coach Manny Lagos during the March 2010 player combine, but he had to take a huge chance to even show up for the tryout. After being cut by DC United late in preseason, Wasson drove more than 18 hours to attend the Stars preseason camp, getting in front of Lagos on the field without ever having spoken to him about trying out for the team.
The risk paid off, and the Stars signed Wasson less than a month later. He can play effectively as both an outside back, contributing forward runs down the wing to the attack, or anywhere in the midfield.
He began his professional career with his hometown Colorado Rapids. The Rapids selected Wasson 38th overall in the 2006 Supplemental Draft. He went on to play 22 games in a season-and-a-half with the Rapids before departing for Germany in July 2007. In two years in Germany, he played with SV Meppen and VfL Osnabruck.
After two seasons with the Air Force Academy, where he recorded 23 goals and seven assists in 37 appearances, Wasson transferred to the University of Tulsa in 2004. He started 43 games in two seasons with the Golden Hurricane, scoring eight goals and six assists in a more defensive role. He and Stars defender Chris Clements were teammates at Tulsa in 2005.
Off the season, Wasson enjoys playing poker and golf (a common hobby among Stars players). In addition to English, he speaks German fluently.
